Have knowledge of County roads, city streets and core business locations, the ability to run a tablet, complete simple logs and vehicle service records. Roadrunner Driver Job Description

This is responsible work in the operation of a standard or wheelchair accessorized motor vehicle, van or bus in the transportation of individuals to designated locations.

Work involves responsibility for the safe operation of standard and wheelchair accessorized motor vehicles, vans and buses used in the transporting the public. Work also involves assuring passenger safety; maintaining mileage, vehicle service and related records; and performing minor vehicle maintenance and repair functions. An employee in this class is expected to have knowledge of, and comply with, all laws and regulations concerning the operation of motor vehicles. Supervision is received from an administrative superior with work being reviewed through public and passenger feedback and the safe and satisfactory operation of vans and related vehicles.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Operate a standard or wheelchair accessorized motor vehicle, van or bus in compliance with all laws and regulations concerning the operation of motor vehicles; receive and log passenger names and addresses from dispatcher and arrive/depart per scheduled times; monitor and maintain appropriate fluid levels for gas, oil, brakes, etc.; visually inspect vehicle lights and tires to ensure proper performance; conduct minor maintenance and repair functions; inform supervisor when maintenance and/or repairs are needed.

Wash vehicle windows and fill vehicle with gas; wash outside and vacuum inside of vehicle as time permits; maintain mileage, gas and vehicle service records as required.

Load and unload passengers at designated locations; use proper procedures for safe operation of ramp, wheelchair lift and tiedowns; assist passengers in and out of vehicles; assist non-ambulatory passengers in and out of vehicles and in maneuvering standard and battery-powered wheelchairs in and out of buildings; assist passengers with packages and personal items, as necessary; ensure passengers are wearing seat belts and remain seated when vehicle is in motion; maintain passenger discipline to ensure orderly and safe driving and riding conditions.

Assist in new driver orientation and training; complete necessary on-the-job training and safety certification as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of all laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles, vans and buses.
  • Knowledge of driving courtesy and defensive driving principles.
  • Some knowledge of County roads, city street and core business locations.
  • Some knowledge of the needs of persons with physical or developmental disabilities and the elderly.
  • Ability to complete simple logs and vehicle service records.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other employees and the general public.
  • Skill in the operation of standard and wheelchair accessorized motor vehicles, vans and buses.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a senior high school or equivalent with experience in the operation of motor vehicles and the transportation of persons with developmental disabilities and/or the elderly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of a senior high school curriculum with experience in the operation of motor vehicles or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the desirable knowledges, abilities, and skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid State of Nebraska driver’s license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Yearly background checks for full time and intermittent drivers.
Yearly driver’s license checks for full time and intermittent drivers.
Full time employees will be required to pass NIMS (National Incident Management System) training.
Complete all assigned training.
